Networks of Action

Kai West is grounded in the belief that true kai resilience and sovereignty can only be achieved when communities lead, shape, and hold the systems that nourish them. Our work is guided by a Collective Impact approach, which provides a backbone for shared purpose, aligned action, and continuous learning, while recognising that real transformation comes from the people, relationships, and lived knowledge within the system itself.

At a time when the dominant food system is becoming increasingly unsustainable and is failing too many whānau, Kai West is helping to design the foundations for a new, community-led kai system to emerge in West Auckland. Rather than attempting to repair what is broken, we focus on growing the conditions in which something new, resilient, and regenerative can take root. This kaupapa strengthens the foundations for long-term, transformational change by supporting regenerative, inclusive, and resilient food system initiatives.

Kai West’s Networks of Action bring together a growing collective of people, initiatives, and organisations committed to strengthening food resilience and sovereignty across West Auckland. Through these networks, we facilitate collaboration that enables communities to share knowledge, skills, and resources, fostering shared goals and coordinated action toward a more connected and resilient local food system.

The networks are grounded in community organising, an essential approach for achieving long-term systems change. Community organising brings individuals and groups together around a shared kaupapa, building collective capacity to exercise power through shared leadership, ownership, and participation. This approach supports people and organisations to grow their capabilities, meet community needs more holistically, and recognise and build upon the strengths that already exist within their communities.

As local efforts, grassroots initiatives, community gardens, māra kai, youth leaders, food rescue groups, educators, and neighbourhood connectors begin to connect, they first form networks. As trust deepens and learning is shared, these networks evolve into active communities of practice. When communities of practice align around collective intentions and shared action, a new system begins to emerge, one that holds capacities and strengths far greater than the sum of individual efforts. Through this network approach, Kai West is intentionally cultivating partnerships that span the entire food system and beyond, enabling community-led solutions to flourish.
