West Auckland kai stories: Past - Present - Future
Kai West has led several Kai Conversations across West Auckland, exploring the past, present and future of kai while capturing stories that connect people, place and whakapapa.
The project gathers stories from across communities, reflecting memories of abundance, traditional food practices and the enduring role of mana whenua as kaitiaki of the land. It weaves together narratives of Māori relationships with whenua and kai, alongside stories brought by the many communities who have made West Auckland home over time.
We want to continue capturing and celebrating these stories of kai in West Auckland, helping to preserve the memories, knowledge and experiences that have shaped our local food story.
Do you have a story to share about kai, growing, gathering, fishing, gardening, food traditions or the places that once fed your community? We would love to hear from you. If you have stories, photographs or other memories of food in West Auckland, please get in touch and help us build this living collection of our shared food history.
